A few hours later, I found out what parkour was. Parkour was awesome.
In parkour, you made the world your obstacle course. A park bench? Maybe you did a shoulder roll over it. Maybe you tried to jump it like a hurdle at a track meet. Did you ever want to run straight up a wall like they did in the movies? Learn parkour.
We all met in a park several blocks from the school at a little playground. It was already dark and pretty cold, so there were no little kids there. I didnât know everyone in the class yet. There were about twenty of us, including all the guys at my lunch table.
The street lights were bright enough so we could all see things clearly, and our instructor hadnât shown up yet. It had gotten to the point where we were uncertain if we should maybe go look for our instructor or consider going home when we heard someone running toward us. He was running flat out and heading straight toward the group like he didnât even know we were there. We split apart to give him room and the next thing we knew, he had put a foot on one of the horses mounted on the giant springs.
He did some kind of awesome flip, but didnât stop when he hit the ground again. The next thing I knew, he was bolting for the monkey bars. In three big steps, he was on top of them. I mean his feet were on the skinny little bars on top. His performance didnât stop. He kept going, sprinting across the bars as fast as possible, and then he freaked us all out by jumping from the top of the monkey bars across what had to be fifteen feet, and another three feet up, to land on the bar on the top of the swing set. It seemed like he bounced off the bar and did a backflip, landing on the ground in front of us. He fixed us with a toothy grin and spread his arms out. We applauded because, well, duh.
By the way, if you think Iâm exaggerating, go watch some videos about parkour. They do this kind of stuff all the time. Itâs amazing, but itâs not fake, even though it looks like it sometimes.
âRule number one,â bellowed the man in a Caribbean accent. âIf your brain isnât one-hundred and fifty percent sure you can do what I just did, then you donât try it. Iâm gonna show you how to do it all, but if youâre not ready to do it up here . . .â He pointed to his head. â. . . youâre not gonna do it at all. If something is telling you, âI canât do this,â then you listen! The ground ainât gonna get any softer because you made a mistake. Everybody here is gonna get lumps and bumps and bruises, but I donât want nobody turning into a pancake. Iâll show you how to do it the way itâs supposed to be done, but I canât keep you safe.
